1970's Tips & Tricks
the 1970's is an enduringly popular theme for parties, doesn't matter the generation, everybody seems to love a throw back to the time when flares, hair, fondue and disco were big. be it a nostalgic or kitsch, make sure you get your styling right at your next 70's themed event.
Ladies:
HAIR:
Hair was BIG or long and natural, bust out your hairspray and some curlers for big, softly tousled curls, ala Charlies Angels diva Farrah Fawcet, or Wonder Woman sensation, Lynda Carter.
Another popular cut was of course the shag, perfect for women who already have layering in their hair. Check out Frida, the poster girl of the 70's sensation ABBA, or Carol Brady, both iconic wearers of the flicked out shag style.
Last but definitely not least, why not indulge your inner soul sista and don an afro for the evening? the ultimate style in terms of height and curl make this trend iconic for any woman wishing to embrace a night of disco-dancing-saturday-night-fever-partying.
MAKEUP: If hair was big in the 70's, makeup was more subtle. Pastels where all the rage, pale blue or gold shimmering eyelids teamed with pale pink lipstick and blush.
Fake eyelashes where hugely popular in this era, if you have never applied them before, check out this quick video tutorial on how to apply the full set. They look fantastic and trust me, if applied right will not hurt to take off!
ACCESSORIZING: A tricky subject in 70's styling, as it always depends on the outfit. One can never go wrong with a large pair of hoop earrings.
Here at the Wardrobe, we have numerous styles to choose from and disco balls are always a popular choice.
Necklaces will depend on the outfit, long, pendant styles are simple and elegant, however the bold metal choker with a large medallion looks amazing with a low cut disco dress and adds a real feature piece to your look.
SHOES: why not don a strappy heel or a wooden wedge platform for a more authentic 1970's look. Here at The Wardrobe we have dozens of glitzy heels perfect for tearing up the dance floor!
If you feel as if you can't get past a pair of knee high boots, come on in and try a pair of sequin boots, we have pink, silver and gold currently in stock. Please always give us a call to check availability in your preferred colour and size.
Gentlmen:
HAIR: Gentlemen are not exempt from the big hair craze that struck in the 70's! Long plaited hippy hair, floppy ABBA-esque dos and the bowl cut are perfect for gentlemen who are ready to don their platform shoes and dance the night away!
The Afro is another popular choice for 70's men, and never forget the fashion of hair extends below the hairline to full mustaches, beards and yes, chest hair (it was a thing). If you are not a particularly hairy man, come on in and check out our range of wigs, fake mustaches, beards and chest hair.
ACCESSORIZING: Have you thought of throwing a big fake gold necklace over your unbuttoned shirt and fake (or real) chest hair? well you probably should!
SHOES: What can we say about mens shoes? PLATFORMS! you need them! we have lots of colours and sizes to choose from, including the crowd pleasing "Aquarium plats" with real water and a fake fish in the heel. Always a hilarious option!
If you find yourself unable to stomach (or walk in) this iconic 70's trend, why not try a pair of the wardrobe's cowboy boots? Or our new sparkly pointed boots? They look amazing poking out from underneath a pair of retro flares.
Still feeling uninspired for your 1970's theme? check out some of these original 70's photos or give us a call!
